Most things in life I just kinda wing it and hope for the best. When I moved out of my mom's house and in with my wife I did that exact same thing too. I just winged it. Packed my belongings and drove 3,000 miles away to Virginia. I arrived there and got there just in time to catch the leasing office open and go turn in our cashiers check to sign our lease and get our keys to our first apartment together. Yeah, you guessed it we had a whole lot of nothing.
I just thought I could give you guys small posts about things you should probably be ready to buy or hoard overtime for in the future if you're planning on moving out. Because I had nothing and that was really dumb. I could have been smart and saved a lot more money and planned it more ahead of time. Or I could have been buying little things here and there to be prepared.
- A Simple Set of Pots & Pans
- Keyword Simple, I had some pots and pans I took that my mom had but they were super fancy and I didn't want to ruin them so I hardly ended up using them. Later down the line when you know what you're doing you can invest in a nice set.
- A Couple of Knives & A Cutting Board
- I didn't have any knives for a couple of days or maybe even weeks, it was awful I had to cut potatoes once with a very dull pocket knife it was miserable. Even a cheap Walmart set would be just perfect to just start out.
- Dinnerware Set
- So like Plates & Bowls, Bowls are important because I literally didn't know how to cook so I'm not even going to lie we survived of off soups for a hot minute. The sets usually are more inexpensive and sometimes come with mugs for a bonus.
- Silverware Set
- Doesn't even have to be a fancy once either, we still have our cheap Walmart one we bought that came with a tray.
- Kitchen Utensil Set
- Ours are from Walmart they've done their job but I think we are going to be investing in a nice set pretty darn soon they are looking a little beat up now. You need something with a can opener, bottle opener, measuring spoons, stirring spoons, whisk, potato peeler, & spatula.
- Glasses
- We started off with 4 tall cups, I broke them all over time and bought a new set of like 8 tall cups and 8 small cups and I've broken a fourth of that new set too. This is why I'll never invest in a nice set of cups because I will break all of them and cry.
- Tupperware
- Just a basic set with a couple different sizes.
- Kitchen Cleaning Essentials
- Spice Rack
- Like one with spices in it already, I wish I would have bought one of these. I never did, I still don't have one. But they are so cute and like I said I didn't know how to cook for a hot minute so the spices would have come in handy when I was first learning. Now I can cook and it's dreamy to have a spice rack.
- Appliances
- I guess you could wait for these and buy them as you realize you need them. But some that you can consider would be Blender, Toaster, Waffle Maker, Hand Mixer, Coffee Maker, Chopper & Microwave.
- Dining Set
- A kitchen table and chairs. We didn't buy ours until Thanksgiving time almost a year after living on our own. Only because I didn't want to eat Thanksgiving dinner on the floor or in our bed. So you definitely need it eventually.
Pretty sure I got it all in there if I missed anything feel free to leave a comment. I added in links to inexpensive items. Check them out to get ideas, but to be honest picking out the colors you want and designs are the most fun part about first moving out. You get to style everything however you want, it's awesome.
